Untitled

I realised after I wrote my post about the cathedral that I didn't mention God at all. I don't really know why. I think big, grand things can hide God as much as they (or at least the people who build them) would like to be a show-piece for him. Sometimes it's easier to 'see' God in the smaller things of life. Maybe the way I felt on Saturday was God-related, but I don't know, and I don't want to suggest that God is only found in cathedrals and such places.

Canterbury cathedral is a strange place, and I agree that there are times when God doesn't seem to enter the equation at all. When I go there to pray, it's wonderful sanctuary, but if I happen to be at the cathedral for another reason, somehow that reason can take over. However, singing a choral mass (whether Haydn or Beethoven) in such a building is a profoundly moving experience, partly due to the acoustics and partly due to the significance coinciding of subject matter and space.

Yes, it's definitely a strange place...

I've sung 'church' choral music (although not a mass) in a cathedral before (although never in Canterbury), and you're right, it is a special and moving experience for both of the reasons you describe. Listening to it comes a close second.

Even in smaller churches the choral singing can be beautiful and uplifting to listen to, and indeed participate in. Singing in a cathedral is definitely something extra special, though.
