GUCH is the "Grown Up Congenital Hearts" Patients Association. I am a GUCH. I'm not keen on the term GUCH though, I think they could have thought of a better name. Anyway, in the latest
GUCH News magazine they were asking for people to write stories [presumeably non-fiction] about their experiences as a GUCH. They're hoping to publish them in a book. I'd like to write something, but I'm not sure exactly what to write about. I don't want it to turn into my life story. I should think of a specific time or incident to focus on, but I can't think of what would make a good 'story' or be interesting for other people to read. At the moment I have several things I am thinking of writing about:
- School
- Having an MRI scan
- University
- Having a CT scan
- Having children (or not)
None of them sound particularly interesting do they? Oh well, I will keep thinking.

Hi,
I am undertaking a fundraising scheme to raise money and awareness for GUCH.
My blog is at http://money-for-old-rope.blogspot.com/ and I am atempting to play the bigger and better game to go from a piece of old rope to something I can auction for charity in 18 months.
I already have two trades under my belt and would be very grateful if you would support me.
I have sent you this message because you have GUCH as a theme on your blog. If you have received this in error then please accept my apologies.
I apologise for contacting you in this way but I don't have your email address. Thank you for the comments you left on my blog.
I am currently trading a Sydney Olympic official's tee shirt which I received for 18 pairs of craft scissors which had been traded for the original piece of rope.
I will try to make it a bit more obvious what item I am currently on and what I have traded in the past.
Thank you for offering to put a link on your site to mine. I will add your blof to the list of friends on my blog.
Best regards,
Paul Youngson.
I so agree about the name GUCH. Jst because the person who thought it up is extremely inspirational doesn't mean it's not a horribly patronising name!!
Am similarly struggling with "my story". The difficulty being that I don't think growing up with a heart condition made much difference, but it's hard to expand that to 1500 words in an article about your heart condition! Bit of a paradox!! The first draft is basically a history of what happened when and my feelings about it, but it's going to have to get edited because I'm not sure it's all that interesting.
If you look at the Spring GUCH news there is a story which is most peculiar but which I presume is supposed to be a romanticised version of reality...
Hello anonymous, thanks for your comment. Glad I am not the only one who feels like that about the name!
I still haven't started writing my story - in a way I'm having the same problem as you, in that on a practical day-to-day basis my heart condition hasn't made that much difference, for which I am grateful. I think it has affected my attitudes and 'psychology' though - see my entry on my reactions to medical things! (Although I don't have proof of my hypotheses).
I will have to have a think about my story, but I'm hoping to start writing today. Your story is probably more interesting to other people than it is to you, so I wouldn't worry too much about it not being very interesting.
Haven't had my Spring GUCH News yet - the story sounds intriguing!
Oops I meant hypothesis!
Spring edition of GUCH news arrived in late March. Expect it is around somewhere... Summer one is due about now but not yet arrived.
Dunno about my story being terribly interesting, but they asked for contributions and I am not likely to resist the allure of getting 1500 words to talk about myself!!
Hallo I absolutely adore your site. You have beautiful graphics I have ever seen.
